Understanding Search Engines
In order to list a website into a search engine it’s important to know the process that it goes through in order to get to a searcher. With this vital information you or your SEO Consultant can better optimize the website in order to get a higher ranking and attract more searchers. Though the steps are only a few, it takes a lot of time to process all of the websites on the web.
The programs that explore the web indexing every piece of information are called web crawlers or spiders. They basically jump from page to page through links indexing the information they come by. However, do not expect that a change that you make to your website will automatically affect your ranking. Web crawlers visit a website once every one to two months, so be patient with them.
Web crawlers look for information that they can read, such as links, text, keywords, and metatags in order to index a website. So, it is of great importance that you have a well organized website that has valuable information readable for a web crawler to get a higher ranking. As there is information that web crawlers can read, there is also information that they cannot read. They cannot read flash movies, music, java scripts, images and frames, so avoid these at all costs, or at least do not rely on them for your rating. The whole reason SEO was created was so web crawlers can see and understand your website better so more searchers can find it.
Indexing is another important step to the process. This is basically the information picked up by web crawlers as they jump from page to page. The data they read is collected and organized into huge databases for later retrieval. They index by identifying the major keywords, metatags, and links and then use them to organize the information. This is where good search engine optimization comes in handy as if you don’t have properly input keywords, links, and metatags a web crawler cannot identify and classify your web page for indexing.
So, how do search engines get all that information to come up when an inquiry is made? When a request is made by a searcher into a search engine it’s processed. They words used are passed through the search engines database of indexes. Since most searches bring up millions of pages it then organizes all of the processed information and calculates it by reverence depending on the algorithm of the search engine itself.
An algorithm is a process of calculating reverence when organizing indexed web pages for an inquiry. The algorithm calculations are based on various things in a webpage such as keyword density, incoming and outgoing links, or metatags, in various orders of importance. For instance, with the new Google Caffeine Google will no longer use metatags as an algorithm, however Yahoo still uses them. This is why you get different results from different search engines, as each has their own individual algorithm for reverence. Also, it’s important that you stay on top of news for major search engines, as they often change their algorithms.
The final step to a search in a search engine is when searchers see the final result, called retrieval. This is when the web crawlers have indexed all of the information in the databases, and the information has been processed and calculated using that specific search engines algorithm. This is when the searcher sees the results of their inquiry in order by reverence.
So, before starting your Search Engine Optimization, know what a search engine really is and the steps it takes to bring up the information to your screen. Knowing what web crawlers see will help you in organizing the information necessary to create a successful website. Having an SEO Consultant will be of great help to improve your websites rankings and get more searchers traffic.
